LAUREN BRICKEN: Make-up ARTist

Another ARTIST I’d like to say thanks to is Lauren. With her tools handy and within reach, she made Susanna looked like a Southern Belle. Together with Joy Thigpen’s styling and direction, they pulled off another shoot worthy of a feature in blogs and magazines. I can’t wait!

JOY THIGPEN: Creative Genius

I knew I heard that name before… when Rosanna (Fellow photographer and coordinator at Mike Colon’s Atlanta Workshop) mentioned Joy Thigpen. Rosanna went on to describe how AWESOME Joy is and that she had worked with Jose Villa! I look at magazines all the time (well, STUDY) and especially LOVE Southern Weddings Magazine. I still have its FIRST issue – cover photographed by film photographer Jose Villa and styled by Joy! I thought ‘WOW.. One day, I dream about shooting a wedding like this’.  Well, this is close enough : )

When it came time to head over to Waters Mill for our STYLED wedding shoot, I could not wait to see THE Joy Thigpen herself in action and her ‘Organic Elegance’ vision. She was hard at work along with two of her assistants- crafting, designing…. everything from the bouquet to the tablescape and the ‘bride’.

Joy: What an honor!

STYLED Engagement: Amy & Blake

Have you had 20+ cameras pointing at you at the same time? All with paparazzi styled lenses (no flash)?!  Well, Amy and Blake was a sport and was totally comfortable with us, shooters. We were about 10- 15 feet away, giving them plenty of room to be and enjoy each other. They didn’t care if we were Nikon or Canon shooters, we were there to capture anything and everything. With our 70- 200mm lenses/ 200mm lenses, we snapped away at this oh-so cute couple from all angles. (I heard Blake was once a model for Abercrombie and Fitch. This wasn’t revealed until the shoot was over.)

The ‘Engagement shoot’ started around the ‘neighborhood’ of ReThink Offices. Not only was the office cool, the environment was awesome! There were gardens, neat architectural details throughout and community-like amenities within walking distance. It was like a college town, country club, gated community all rolled into one!

Ok… time for something more interesting.

This couple sizzles…

Mike Colon: Atlanta Workshop

It was surreal… THE day was finally here! All the stars were aligned for me attend Mike Colon’s Atlanta Workshop in May. I arrived with plenty of time to spare in Cumming, Georgia- a quaint, rather classy- hip ‘new’ place.  The all day workshop was held at the ReTHINK Offices (owned by Reggie Joiner and his non-profit origanization) and to be amongst 20+ driven photographs from around the country and Panama, I knew this was going to be great! The RETHINK Offices was THE coolest work environment I’ve ever been in. It was setup up like a home, very modern but warm and cozy. Uncluttered and well planned- I can see myself calling a place like this my gallery/home.

But earlier this year, I was blown away at WPPI, an international photographer’s convention in Vegas. I had such a good time, I’m still smiling from that experience : ) I’ve met countless awesome, inspirational, talented, gifted photographers but one person I didn’t run into was Mike Colon. In person, he is much taller. Warm, calm, well spoken individual who LOVES what he does and is proud of his family. You can see his passion in his craft even after 10+ years in the industry. I was in the clouds. I couldn’t believe I get to do THIS! (Thank YOU Don, Cat, and my ‘fans’ for this opportunity to be here). Anyway, the class is filled with talent (near and far) and they have become my peers and friends. I’m so thankful.

Here are a few ‘behind the scenes’ shots…

Next post: A STYLED Engagement shoot with AMY & BLAKE. Thanks for being here : )

Oh baby! Justina + Bryan

Jedidiah is the chosen name. Jed as they will call him is having a birth-day sometime in June and two lucky parents-to-be can’t be any more anxious and excited! They have prayed for this little miracle and in no time, he was in the ‘picture’. Those little heart beats, cravings (fish and sweet tea), backache, and not so subtle kicks are well worth it.

This outfit is one of Bryan’s favorites… because he loves softball and riding his motorcycle.

JustinaMaternity_17

A special bible Justina held close to her heart and bed while trying to get pregnant. It gave her FAITH that God is always in control.

JustinaMaternity_39 b

OK.. you know there’s a SHOE shot somewhere. This adorable pair is a gift from Justina’s great aunt Molly, a special lady she has always looked up to. This shot took a few tries… no baby or momma was injured during session ; )

JustinaMaternity_35

Bryan’s prized possessions. I’m sure nobody’s looking at the bike when Justina’s riding behind him.

JustinaMaternity_30

Justina… look at you! Looking at him ; )

JustinaMaternity_122

Justina’s favorite book (Stevie’s Tricycle) when she was a little girl. Her Mom, Janice read it to her EVERY single night.

JustinaMaternity_128

Justina…did you say you didn’t really feel/ look  h-o-t? I beg to differ.

Thanks to Justina’s mom and dad for this beautiful property. I could photograph here all day long! There’s a little of everything here. THE perfect place with perfect lighting.

JustinaMaternity_105

Justina mentioned an old truck she’d like to incorporate in the shoot. Her dad Billie takes it out in the summers with the family. Don’t you think Jed will love this truck?

JustinaMaternity_135

Here they are in front of the old meat and storage house which belong to her grandfather (PapPaw). It makes anyone look good here.

JustinaMaternity_55 bl

By the way, Justina is my hairstylist and a magician when it comes to ‘poofing’ my flat straight hair. She makes it look so easy!

Justina: THANK YOU so much for having me document this special journey for you and Bryan. You both are gorgeous with a capital G! I can’t wait for little Jed and your NEW LOVE for him. It will be beautiful : ) See more of Justina & Bryan here (SLIDE SHOW) and be sure to leave a comment for this ‘G’ couple : )

NuanceUnceway Just want to say what a great blog you got here!

Thumbs up, and keep it going!

Why I Love My Clients

I shoot on location. I LOVE to shoot on location. One reason why I love my clients is that they always know awesome places to photograph. I sometimes suggest a location or two but when my clients KNOW of a good spot, it’s a bonus! My recent shoot took place at River Caney (Breathitt County). Narrow roads, large fields of wild flowers, horses, barns…. my kind of place! I never tire of shooting at these natural, old, rustic spots.

DSC_4355

TWO:  They allow me to be creative and they TRUST my judgement! I was told once to wear a t-shirt that says “Trust Me!” when I’m shooting ;  ) Justina, my fabulous Stylist and ONE HOT MOMMA is here on her husband’s Harley. At almost 34 weeks, she working the curves! Who says you can’t ‘ride’ a bike while you’re pregnant? (Disclaimer: Please consult your OB/GYN before operating any type of machinery!)

So, I always encourage having personal items incorporated in the shoot. It simply says YOU! PLUS, I’m sure the ‘husbands’ out there are more than happy to show THIS off in their garage!

DSC_4081

THREE: My clients KNOW the importance of GOOOOD light. When do you know? When you look like you’ve just been kissed by the sun : ) Good light simply makes everything and everyone prettier. Who wouldn’t want that? Justina is gorgeous anyway but with good light, she is glowing. Bryan doesn’t look too bad either. You can see that he adores his beautiful wife.DSC_4217

So, if you are wondering why I stress on locations (location, location, location), personal items, and best time for great light? You can see why. You will look awesome! You know you already are. Thanks for being here and check back soon for more of Justina & Bryan. I can’t wait!! xo
