CASEY + JOSH: Engagement (Keeneland)

They were watching ‘Legend of the Falls’ on TV one night and Josh knew he had found the ONE. Casey and Josh had always known each other growing up, acquaintances.. friends.. but sparks started flying when they went on a family vacation together in Destin, Florida a mere couple of years ago. After meeting them briefly several months ago and our session last Saturday, I knew they were meant for each other. The way he looked at her. The way she looked at him. They have eyes only for one another and the DAY was getting warmer! It was evident how Josh felt about Casey. He loved her for her. Inside and all. After being together for over a year, Josh knew it was TIME. He had planned a surprise ‘appearance’ at Casey’s school (Casey is a 3rd Grade School teacher) one fine day in August. He had her students play ‘Hangman’ on the board and it spelled out “Will you marry me?”. Now, can you feel it yet? Tears, goosebumps, something? It started to feel REAL as Josh walked in with a tiny box containing a gorgeous princess cut diamond ring. So, there’s no pressure but what can Casey say in front of ALL her students and 75 other people?? YES! Of course : )

Keeneland was the perfect place to photograph this sizzling couple. Well, I’ll let the photos do the talking… caseyjosh_0327_320

 Love Casey’s ‘peacock’ necklace!

YES! She came with a pair of watermelon Guess heels! caseyjosh_0327_380

We had a close encounter with Keeneland security while we were shooting at a barn in Keeneland. Apparently someone (a lady we saw when we pulled up next to the barn) called security and reported that we were in the barn. I guess we were trying to ‘steal’ a thoroughbred or two or something. Or maybe rent a horse for some galloping shots of the couple. The guard saw we were obviously OUTSIDE and not disturbing anything and was extremely nice to us. No harm done. To the lady: Thank you so much for allowing us to shoot!

Stuff

Saturday- what a glorious day! It was 65 deg F and not a drop of rain. I have been looking forward to that day for weeks and YES, it’s finally here! I met up with three new friends/ photographers, one of whom I met at WPPI!  There were photographers from all over the country and many from across the world but I met ONLY one person from Kentucky and she happened to sit next to me at Elizabeth Messina’s platform class. Aurelia is a photographer based in Lexington, KY and co-runs Sanola Photography with her friend, Sarah. Aseel of Zoombug Photos was also there to hang out with us- chatting about the business of photography and life. It was so refreshing to meet other photographers and network and exchange ideas about our business. ‘3rd Street Stuff’ couldn’t have been a cooler place to hangout in downtown Lexington. It’s ARTSY decor gives the cafe/ sandwich store its COOLNESS and it was jammed pack with unique gifts and accessories. What a fun place to meet and greet! Do check it out next time you’re in Lexington! We plan to meet up again soon!!

Later that afternoon, it was time for the ‘glorious’ afternoon. A day like this is worth WORKING on a Saturday. I LOVE afternoons like this. Just warm, enough. Clear skies, blue of course. AND a beautiful location with so many possibilities. I met Casey and Josh at Keeneland for their Engagement shoot and I was so glad with their choice. I get so excited shooting at new places and settings simply because it allows me to stay fresh and creative! More importantly, it brings the opportunity for unique images! I look forward to more sessions there in the future! Thanks to my assistant ‘Cat’ for some ‘behind the scenes’ images. Will post soon!

Casey and Josh: What a couple you are! Attractive, sweet, and genuine… what more could I ask for? Here’s a sneak peek at this cute couple..

.. loves you! It was starting to be another gloomy day but rain? Just the other day, we set our clocks forward to welcome spring AND sunshine. Spring is slowly peeking through but the clouds decided to accompany us today. However gloomy this Monday is, I chose to embrace the sun even if it’s shining from above, through the clouds. My morning started out smoothly as planned- purse check, camera bag check, Cat check! I had a morning shoot of a precious little girl who turned ONE today. She was at the door ‘waiting’ to be photographed, dressed in nothing but a pink tutu and a pink maribou hair clip. As I was giving little Addi her birthday gift, her big sister greeted me with this little surprise!! A little creamy cashmere furball of a bunny! Awwww.. I can hear it now. Meet Polka-Dots, Miss Lacyn’s new addition. It lays snuggly in the palm of the hand and falls asleep as soon as you lay it on its back. Too precious! OK…on to Addi, the birthday girl. Here’s a sneak peek…

Happy Birthday Addi!

COLOR!

I’ve always wanted something bold! Something wild! For my bouquet. I couldn’t have dreamt of a prettier ‘last minute’ bouquet to carry on my recent WEDDING photo shoot in Vegas. Last minute? YES, it was last minute. I ordered the bouquet at MGM Grand at 11am and got it around 12pm! The floral designer (Jeannie) whipped up this petite arrangement in 10 minutes!! I told the Laura, the Wedding Planner on duty at MGM Grand Chapel that I wanted some fuschia/ hot pink flowers for a bouquet to match my fuschia Martina Valero heels. She called Jeannie and asked if they had flowers in those hues. Well, it must have been my lucky day because they did!! Jeannie put together a monocromatic ‘masterpiece’ with 25 blooms of the most beautiful fuschia and black anenomes, dark pink tulips, and of course some hot pink roses. She added some greenery around the bouquet and finished it off with hot pink organza ribbon and pearled pins. Simply sweet! I was so pleased with this and SO GLAD I decided to incorporate it in the wedding shoot.

Love today

If you had one last day, what would you do? Spend like there’s no tomorrow? Eat at the fanciest restaurant? Take a trip? If you had ONE last day, would you spend it with someone/ people you truly love? Would you embrace each moment and be thankful for that MIRACLE in front of you? There are too many moments we take for granted. Too many occasions we fail or forget to say I LOVE YOU. I’m guilty of it, but life as always, gets in the way. Work gets in the way. Problems get in the way. Moments go by and we fail to see the MIRACLE in front of us. What if I have ONE last day? Would I regret that I didn’t eat that extra piece of cake? Buy that $ 300 dress? Splurge on a pair of $ 900 Louboutin heels? NO! I would be so p***sed off because I didn’t make myself or my family take a family portrait. I do not want that day to come and someone tell me I have ONE last day. Will my loved ones still be around? Don’t let that ONE day come around unannounced. Be with your loved ones. Documented it. Treasure it. What’s the number ONE thing you grab when your house is on fire? It won’t be that dress or the shoes. LOVE TODAY. DOCUMENTED IT TODAY.

Harold just celebrated his 78th birthday this past weekend. With dementia, he is cared for at the VA nursing home 24/7/365. Unable to walk or talk, he may seem helpless. But, he still knows his family is around. His family knows he is around. Hanging on. I had the honor to document this close knit family the other day and it was worth a beautiful saturday afternoon. Thank YOU.

Abbey Oh Chris! This is absolutely beautiful and at the same time breaks my heart. I am going thru the same thing with my dad who’s also in a nursing home, with alzheimers, parkinsons disease and an amputated leg. When I was down there this summer for a visit I pulled out my camera and took pictures so that I can remember. Thank you for sharing this. I’m sure the family will love and cherish these memories!

Is it time?

Once a bride…

I wish…

Life is full of wishes.. (1) I wish the sun was shining,  (2) I wish the I was 5’5″, (3) I wish I had bigger B**bs…ok, ok… I have quite a few wishes but one thing I wish I had done was wear a wedding dress on my wedding day! A real one I mean. It was 11 years ago, we got married and I wore a pale sage green sheath dress. If you’re having a hard time imagining it, it’s something one might wear to work or to a simple wedding ( as a guest). What was I thinking? I WASN’T thinking! Was it money? Maybe. We had a civil ceremony in Feb in Montgomery, Alabama and a small reception in May in Gastonia, North Carolina. Well, if I wasn’t thinking in Feb, I should have known better in May?! Well, I didn’t. This time, I wore a light blue, satin, biased cut, empire style dress. More like for prom. Arrgggh.. I’m so embarrased! Several months ago, I was showing my wedding photographs to Catherine and she asked, “where is your bouquet?” Well, I didn’t have one.  ‘WHAT?”, she asked so surprised. I was 23 at that time and just finished college. We didn’t have a lot of money, well, we didn’t have ANY money so we did everything SIMPLE. Very simple. Photography? I had my trusty Olympus film camera at the time and we took pictures of each other. Hahhaha. Fast forward many years and I can’t help but look back and WISHED for 3 things: (1) a wedding dress (2) a bouquet with fresh flowers, (3) awesome photographs to cherish and share with loved ones. ONE DAY?! Maybe someday…

Here I am on our OFFICIAL wedding day. We had lunch at a local Italian restaurant wearing our wedding ‘outfits. There is no shoe shot but I wore a pair of cream 2″ sandals and cream opaque tights (hey it was February!). Hair: Me, Makeup: Me, Dress: Petite Sophisticates. Jewelry: Pearls from Don.

OldPhotoWedding 002 e

In May (Memorial Day weekend) during our reception… I had my hair up in a bun (hahhahaha), accented with a couple of mismatched roses. I just wanted flowers in my hair… I didn’t care what they were or if they went with the dress. Our official wedding portrait…

I have asked a few friends and clients if they had ADVICE for future brides and grooms out there and here is what they said..

Ashley H-

My advice to other Brides: Don’t sweat the small stuff! If something goes wrong, usually no one knows but you!

Best decision: I’m so glad we decided to take all our pictures before the wedding.

Wish I did better/ different? I wish I had dancing at our wedding. Not doing our first dance as a married couple or dancing with my dad was my biggest regret.

My favorite moment: Walking down the aisle as husband and wife. My husband races so I had placed checked flags in everyone’s seats to wave as we walked out. I suggest putting personal touches in every part of your wedding!

My favorite vendor and why: It’s a tie between 4 Star Catering (because the food was delicious) abd the harpist. The music was beautiful and was totally different than any other wedding I had been to.

Ashley F-

Best decision: Definitely a caterer who does everything and provides everything!

Wish I did better/ different? I wish I had a wedding planner.

My favorite moment: Spending a few moments before the ceremony, just me and my dad. He cried, I cried…

My advice to other Brides: Don’t sweat the small stuff! If something goes wrong, usually no one knows but you!

Karen T-

My advice to other Brides: Relax on the wedding day coz everything will be fine because you have your friends and families to support you.  Nothing will go wrong on your wedding day and even if there is/are, nobody would know coz all your guests will be so busy staring at you and your significant one : )

Be sure to select your bridal parties that you can really count on and most importantly, someone that have already been through a wedding.

Best decision: Marrying my husband?!?!?!? hehehehehe : )

Wish I did better/ different? Excellent photographer – SERIOUSLY! Spend a little more on photographer and less on decorations!!

My favorite moment was? My reception – all our close friends and families were there to enjoy our 10 course meals and of course, the music.

My favorite vendor and Why? The restaurant (Pearl Chinese Restaurant) because the food and service were excellent.

Kirby C-

My advice to other Brides: relish the moment, the day, your spouse and not just the event!!!!

Best decision? Keep it small and intimate!!!

Wish I did better/ different? Kept it smaller and more intimate

My favorite moment was? seeing my husband waiting for me at the end of the aisle with a big smile on his face.

My favorite vendor and Why? The photographer, of course, because you knew they were capturing every moment forever!!!!!

Thanks so much to all my ‘BRIDES’ for taking the time to share a little wisdom. If you like to share a little yourself, please feel free to leave a COMMENT below. Love to hear from you!

Here’s a beautiful portrait of a couple of important people in my life : )
